We wanted to use work overalls for our performers but we had to choose a color that doesn’t immediately remind you of a specific job. We did some research on 70's performance arts for the poses, and Martina often uses contemporary dance stances in her photos. So performance art, contemporary dance, Kurosawa’s Dreams (the boy secretly watching the Kitsune Wedding). We didn’t want to be too literal. The most basic act of photography, the framing, always leaves something out of the picture. You should be able to tell that something is also happening just outside of the frame.
